There are an impressive 42 German universities in the top 500 of the 2018 QS World University Rankings, out of which 15 make the top 200. These high quality institutions are even more appealing by the low cost of tuition fees and in some regions no tuition fee is charged from the students as the universities are administered by region rather than federal authorities.
There are three types of German higher education institution. The first is known simply as Technical universities (TUs) or Universitat. These are largely multi-disciplinary, research focused institutions. Second is the Fachhochschulen and Hochschule universities of Applied Sciences focused on preparing students for Workplaces that require specific skills and knowledge. Courses at these establishments will often provide practical elements or internships. The third category, colleges of Arts, Film or Music, is more inclined towards creative vocations and have special admission requirements, such as aptitude tests and languages etc.
Most of the courses are taught in English, particularly at graduate level, the majority are conducted in German. Majority of universities offer intensive courses in German.
